Hey everyone, I'm frugal (but I didn't just say that!)

Thanks to the New York Times for this sweet picture and commentary on perceptions of frugality in modern romance. Evidently it's OK to be frugal but, especially for men, best not to say so.

This article is really interesting. It made me more aware of how I sort of shudder when I hear the word frugal used. My experience with frugality and males has been that they mean frugal in contexts where it is convenient to them. For example, my ex fiancee thought funding the purchase of a diamond ring to be abhorrent, but he bought himself a saxophone for thousands of dollars. Other people I've dated have been frugal in their grocery habits but have spent much money on musical instruments, drugs, or alcohol. A friend of mine who is married has a husband who insists on restrictive spending, but spends hours and thousands of dollars on his cars and boats.

Clearly, if I find a mate, we will be having separate accounts.
